Thanks for visiting my page. I am a member of Japanese volunteer (like Peace Corps) working in Mozambique which is in eastern Africa. In this page I would like you to know something very interesting, mysterious and historical. Guess what? It is the cave painting!

cave painting in Muze

Ribaue is a small village located in Nampula province and has a good access (approx. 2 hours by car) from Nampula city(the provincial capital and 3rd largest city in Mozambique). Also, it is said that Ribaue has full potential of agriculture due to its comfortable/cooler climate and mountain-oriented irrigation system. In addition to these advantages, Ribaue village (center of Ribaue district) is well designed and is developing at very fast rate. What I want to say is, Ribaue is a good place to visit.

In Ribaue, there are 3 cave paintings. First is located in “Chica”, next is located in “Matharia” and the last one is located in “Muze”. I think that you will like the paintings in Chica and Matharia, but I strongly recommend you visit to the cave in Muze. Based on my experience of visiting and seeing all the 3 paintings, the one in Muze was so much impressive than the others.

Muze is west side of the district and it takes 1.5 hour from Ribaue village by car. In order to reach the cave painting, you need another 1 hour to climb a steep mountain. This climbing is very good exercise, so I think its better to train and shape up a little bit before you come. Just a little bit. When you arrive at Muze, it is required to greet to a community leader. The mountain which has the painting is sacred so that you should be respectful/polite for them and their culture and traditional.

There is one more information about the cave painting. Unfortunately, nobody knows who did create the painting, when did and why did... I wish we had some information about it, but maybe this missing link makes us imagine many things instead. So let’s forget it and enjoy yourself with the mystery paintings.
